Special Report – Ebola Bundibugyo 2026: Context and History

🇬🇧 Article 1 – Context and History

Origin of the Bundibugyo Ebola Virus

The Bundibugyo strain (BDBV) of the Ebola virus was first identified in 2007 in Bundibugyo District, Uganda. Unlike the Zaire or Sudan strains, it showed slightly lower lethality but spread rapidly in rural communities.

Previous Outbreaks

  • 2007 – Uganda: first appearance, about 149 cases and 37 deaths.
  • 2012 – DRC (Isiro, Orientale Province): resurgence with 57 cases and 29 deaths.
  • 2018–2020 – DRC (North Kivu and Ituri): although dominated by the Zaire strain, suspected Bundibugyo cases were reported.

Situation in 2026

In September 2026, the Bundibugyo strain re‑emerged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the Great Lakes region. The outbreak is marked by:

  • Unprecedented speed of spread: cases doubled within a week in some hotspots.
  • Major community impact: most deaths occurred outside treatment centers.
  • Hospital fragility: local infrastructures were quickly overwhelmed.

Aggravating Factors

  • Cross‑border mobility: frequent exchanges with Uganda and Rwanda.
  • Social mistrust: rumors, vaccine refusal, and resistance to medical teams.
  • Socio‑political context: instability and lack of national coordination.
